- Hi there, guys and gals; I happen to own two Amigas, an
- A1200/030/882/50/8Mb and an A500/020/881/14/1Mb. I needed to network
- them, so I run for AmiTCP via SLIP using the serial port. Well, the
- serial port needs to be used for MIDI on one machine and a modem on the
- other. The parallel port is destined for a Canon color printer on one
- machine and a sampler on the other, so PLIP is not an option either.
- Ethernet cards are expensive on both machines, and a case of surgery on
- the A500, same for ARCNet ones, not available for the A1200. And here
- comes AmigaLink...
- AmigaLink would network my two Amigas by means of the floppy port, but
- it would cost around $300 in the US, which translates to around $600 on
- Argentina (where I live). It is still a lot of money. As the AmigaLink
- hardware fits inside a single DB25 conector, I thought it may not be too
- complicated to develop something alike as a shareware/PD replacement. I
- 've been studying the CSMA and CSMA/CD specs and the Amiga's disk DMA
- and it seems to be a hard work but a nice one.
- I post this here hoping to find kind souls willing to cope with this
- project, as I feel I couldn't do it on my own. The whole project would
- involve:
- 1- Designing a CSMA or CSMA/CD hardware interface based on the
- Amiga's floppy disk hardware DMA (I thought about using a token bus
- scheme but it came out as a harder MAC layer)
- 2- Writing a MAC/LLC or a simple Ethernet alike layer II handler
- for the above, as a SANA II device; so the end user can use AmiTCP,
- Envoy or what he/she prefers, I personally will probably buy Envoy.
-
- As I'm not able to post to comp.sys.amiga.networking, I will
- appreciate some nice pal crossposting (forwarding) this article to that
- newsgroup, feel free to post it to related mailing lists, as I'm not
- aware of any of them, should they exist.
- And as a final word, please respond via email to my address
- below, I will periodically post the status of this project.
- Thanks a lot for reading such a long article, best regards.
